Runecrafting Guide Made by RuneMania, the wiki for the best Runescape things
Introduction
To start the Runecrafting Skill, you must complete the Rune Mysteries quest. Runecrafting is a very fun and interesting skill. It allows you to craft runes by going into the altar with a Talisman and some Essence. To gather Essence you will needed to be teleported by the five mages/wizards around RuneScape and mine the the big stashes of it around you. After you have mined the Essence you can enter the portal to leave and deposit at a nearby bank. Varrock and the Yanille Magic Guild are the best places to do this.
Aubury - Located in the Varrock Rune Shop.
Wizard Sedridor - Located in the basement of the Wizards Tower.
Wizard Distentor - Located in the Yanille Magic Guild.
Wizard Cromperty - Located just north-east of the Ardougne Market.
Brimstail Gnome - Found in a cave in the south-west corner of the Tree Gnome Stronghold.
Essence
The first type of Essence is Rune Essence and can be mined by anybody around RuneScape. You can craft all of the F2P runes with this Essence, which includes Air, Mind, Water, Earth, Fire and Body. You will always mine Rune Essence as long as you are in a F2P world or in a P2P world with a Mining level of less than 30. The second type of Essence is Pure Essence. It is used to make all the P2P Runes though can be used for F2P Runes. You will always mine it as long as you are in a P2P world and have a Mining level of at least 30.
Talismans
Now that you have got your Essence, you will need a Talisman so you can enter the altars in which Rune you wish to make. Many of them are dropped by enemies around RuneScape, and after you have the one you need, bring it to the ruins of that specific Rune (If you have an Air Talisman, bring it to the ruins of the Air Altar) and use it with the "Mysterious Ruins" to be teleported to the actual Altar. This table shows you the different talismans and where to get them from.

Tiaras
Tiaras are used more than Talismans, mainly because you can wear them on your head and don't take up that extra part of inventory space. Once you have crafted your regular Tiara, see the Crafting Guide for more info, you need to enchant it. In order to do so, bring the Talisman to the altar of it's type (i.e take a Tiara and and an Air Talisman to the Air Altar to make an Air Tiara) and use the Talisman on the altar to combine it with the Tiara. Now you will have an enchanted Tiara, which is much more useful for Runecrafting, especially when making those high level Runes as you really need that extra inventory space.

Pouches
After completing the Zamorak Mage's Task, Members have the ability to use Pouches. Pouches are very convenient as they can carry extra essence and only take up one inventory space each. The best times to use Pouches are when mining essence or runecrafting, especially those high level Runes as you want to be able to carry as much essence as possible. There are 4 different sized Pouches, each of them being able to carry different amount of essence. They are sometimes dropped by Abyssal creatures in the Abyss, including Abyssal Leeches (level 41), Guardians (level 59) and Walkers (level 81). Over time Pouches happen to degrade, so you won't be able to carry as much essence in each Pouch. Though it doesn't mean you have to get new Pouches all over again, as the Dark Mage in the centre of the Abyss can repair them to their full capacity again.

Gloves
Runecrafting Gloves come in three varieties. They are handy for runecrafting as they double your exp depending on what Rune you are crafting. To obtain them, you need to buy them off Reggie in the Fist of Guthix for 75 Tokens. After crafting 1,000 runes to the corresponding gloves they will crumble, though you can buy another pair off Reggie for the same price. Air Runecrafting Gloves. Water Runecrafting Gloves. Earth Runecrafting Gloves.
Altars
The altars are the place in which you will be teleported to where you can craft your Runes. You will need your Talisman/Tiara and your Runes. When you go throught the portal you will find yourself in a mysterious world, suited to the type of Rune you are about to craft. Simply click on the altar in the middle and craft your Runes. This table below will show you where the different altars are scattered around runescape.

The Runes
Finally, the Runes. When you first start runecrafting you will only be able to craft 1 Rune per essence. Though when you get a higher level you will be able to start crafting more than 1 rune per essence. i.e at level 99 you can craft 10 Air Runes per essence! That's a total of 280 Runes per full inventory! Just remember you will always make the same exp as you would by crafting 1 Rune per essence than you would as crafting 10 Runes per essence.

Combination Runes
Combination Runes are a newer addition to Runecrafting for Members, and they are very useful to Wilderness Player-Killing. The basic idea is that you can combine 2 Elemental Runes together to make a single Rune. This newly-formed Rune counts as 2 different elements, such as both Water and Air. Only Elemental Runes such as Air, Water, Earth and Fire can be combined. In order to combine Runes, you'll need a few things including 1 of each Talisman, 1 type of Rune, and Rune Essence. So, if you wanted to make Mist Runes, bring an Air and a Water Talisman, either Air or Water Runes (whichever you wish to use), and Rune Essence. Depending on which Runes you choose to bring along, go to the other Temple (if you're making Mist Runes and bringing Air Runes, go to the Water Temple). Enter the temple using the correct Talisman as usual, and then use the other Talisman on the Altar to combine the Runes.
Mist - Air and Water
Dust - Air and Earth
Mud - Water and Earth
Smoke - Air and Fire
Steam - Water and Fire
Lava - Earth and Fire
The Necklace of Binding will give you a 100% success rate while combining Runes if worn. It can be obtained by enchanting an Emerald Necklace using the Enchant Level 2 Jewelry spell.
